GOVERNOR EMMANUEL UNVEILS U. J ESUENE SQUARE, INAUGURATES ROADS IN EKET METROPOLIS

The cosmopolitan city of Eket Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State is wearing a new look as the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, brings to bear the completion agenda drive of his administration to the Oil rich city with the inauguration of remodeled roads, strategic roundabouts, erosion control projects, an amphi-theater as well as the statue of the late former Military Governor of the old South Eastern State, Brigadier General U. J. Esuene.

Commissioning the projects, Saturday , at Eket Local Government Area, Governor Emmanuel recalled the struggles of late Gen U.J.Esuene, describing him as an illustrious son of Eket as well as an iconic leader in the former South-Eastern region and paid glowing tributes to him for laying the foundation of development for other leaders in the state to consolidate.

The Governor stated that the U. J Esuene Square will foster peace and unity among the people as well as give them identity as a people who embrace development envisioned by a great leader.

“We dedicate this day to other heroes of this community of Ekid nation as a whole. I want us to know that this place should promote unity, this place should promote togetherness, this place should promote peace, let this reflect on those fights on what our heroes fought for, they fought for the unity of this state, they fought for the progress of this state, they fought for the peace of this state and as we commission this project today, may they be remembered for that fight, that struggle and remembered for their achievements, we are only building on the foundations they laid,” he stated.

The Governor expressed appreciation to the people of Eket for celebrating him and giving him tremendous support during his administration in the past eight years.

He regretted the delay in the construction of roads in the Eket metropolis, explaining that the delay was caused by the death of the contractor in Nigerpet and other challenges and thanked God for realising his vision of making Eket a modern Eket.

In the project overview, Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, stated that the project has 16m deep underground drain with 2.64km evacuating water from Eket into the River, adding that the project has a dual carriage way, single carriage way and two roundabouts with streets lights.

He also hinted that the U.J. Esuene Square has an amphitheatre with the capacity of seating 600 people for an event.

In their goodwill messages Sen. Helen Esuene, Chief Nduese Essien, Paramount Ruler of Eket Edidem E.C.D Abia, poured encomiums on Governor Udom Emmanuel, saying his record of achievements will remain in the annals of history as a man who defied challenges to rewrite the story of Eket, reminiscing the ruins Eket went through especially during the country’s civil war, more than five decades ago.

The Governor was later treated to a thank you rally at the Eket Modern Stadium Complex.

The colourful appreciation ceremony was organized by the people of Eket senatorial district. And was chaired by Chief Assam Assam, former ambassador of Nigeria to Russia.
