Some gunmen operating in Anambra State in the South-East of Nigeria have reportedly kidnapped a Nigerian Navy officer identified as Lieutenant IS Ozuowa and an unconfirmed number of civilians in the state.

The naval officer, who was said to have concluded his “Long Course” on Friday at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Ologbo, was abducted on Sunday night at the Upper Iweka Roundabout in Onitsha while on transit from Port Harcourt.

Lt. Ozuowa was reportedly kidnapped alongside some civilians.

PRNigeria quoted a military source as saying that “As at the time he was kidnapped, he sent a distress message to Slt Bomadi, the Ag BOO NOP ONITSHA.

“The Ag BOO quickly alerted its own troops stationed at various checkpoints along different exit routes from Onitsha.

“Also, our own QRF was deployed immediately. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the officer.”

However, when SaharaReporters contacted the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, he said, “I don’t have such information before me please.”
