AKWA IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT’S COMMITMENT TO SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

The Akwa Ibom State Government, led by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the advancement of sports within the state during the 79th Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Uyo, the State Capital, on Sunday.

Representing the Governor at the event, Deputy Governor Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi emphasized the government’s dedication to its sports development objectives, which encompass the enhancement of sporting facilities and the implementation of comprehensive programs.

Governor Umo Eno underscored Akwa Ibom’s reputation as a hub for sports and reiterated his administration’s determination to elevate sports and youth development within the framework of the ARISE Agenda.

He further emphasized, “The Governor is a passionate advocate for sports, which is evident in the inclusion of sports within the ARISE Agenda. Our current administration is fully committed to advancing sports development as a means to motivate and provide meaningful opportunities for the youth, ultimately steering them away from potential pitfalls.”

Acknowledging the NFF’s choice to host its 2023 AGM in Akwa Ibom, the Governor urged the nation’s football authority to make optimal use of the state’s world-class sporting facilities, including the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the Eket Stadium, and the Uyo Township Stadium, all of which meet international standards.

Governor Umo Eno also advocated for increased participation of women in sports administration across Nigeria. Additionally, he extended his best wishes to the Super Eagles for their forthcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier Match against São Tomé and Principe, scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The event also featured remarks from the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, and the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, who expressed their gratitude to the Akwa Ibom State Government for fostering a conducive environment for sports to thrive in the state.

Notable attendees at the event included the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Youths and Sports, members of the NFF Board, and prominent sports stakeholders from across the nation.
