AKWA UTD U-15 TEAM DIM STARS IN IKENNE

Akwa United U-15 team made a winning start to their 2023 NPFL/La Liga Youth League following a 2-1 come-back win over Sunshine Stars U-15 team in Group B opening match at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The junior Promise Keepers, semi finalist in the last edition of the competition in 2021 fell behind in the 13th minute after their opponents were awarded a penalty in which they converted.

Coach Edward Edemekong’s boys clawed their way back into the game in the 22nd minute through Akanimo Johnson who cleverly chip the ball over the goalkeeper to draw his side level at 1-1.

Two minutes later, the Junior Promise Keepers took the lead through Daniel Mendie’s spectacular effort from the edge of the box as they went into the half-time break with a deserved lead.

The second half saw both sides making efforts to increase their goal tally but their attempts were unsuccessful. In the end, Akwa United were resolute in defending their lead which earned them their first win of the campaign.

Akwa United midfielder Daniel Mendie who scored the winning goal that inspired his team to victory was voted Player of the Match and was presented with an award after the game.

Impressed with the team’s performance, former Akwa United player Aniekeme Asuquo congratulated the team and splashed a cash gift of Fifty Thousand Naira (50,000.00) on them and wished them a successful tournament.

Akwa United U-15 will next face Kwara United U-15 team on Monday at eight O’clock in the morning at the same venue.
