Abia Warriors captain Nweke Kalu: God was on our side for derby win over Rangers

Abia Warriors skipper Nweke Kalu says God had a big role to play on their derby triumph over arch rivals, Rangers Int’l away from home.

Abia Warriors stunned the hosts 2-0 on the weekend.

Away at a raucous Awka Township Stadium, Abia Warriors managed to pick up an inspiring win largely due to the creativity of captain Kalu. Coming into the game in good form over the course of the pre-season, Nweke Kalu created the first goal of the match with a brilliant in-swing cross to locate Bello Lukman’s head in the 41st minute.

“I’m really delighted to have won my first game of the season as the club captain and most importantly, a derby and to see the happy fans,” Kalu told Lodgexpress.com post-game.

“Two derby victories in a row? I hope we can keep on like this for the rest of the season because derbies are special games and the fans need it more for bragging rights.

“We did very well in the first half, we should’ve made it 3-0 and ended the match but coming into the second half we were lucky because Rangers created dangerous chances, but sometimes you need a bit of luck. God was on our side and our goalie (Thomas), was amazing and he was unarguably the best performer out there.”
